Saving Bolvar is not related to the Deathbringer encounter (it may or may not be related to any other encounter). Saving Bolvar is an option - you choose to save him or not, possibly for extra loot or difficulty. Bolvar is just the Alliance/Horde version of "the Deathbringer". Bolvar sends his Deathlord, Darion Mograine, and the other three Horsemen to Light’s Hope Chapel to recover the body of Tirion Fordring. The Ebon Blade did not agree with this plan because following through with it would cause mistrust in the Ebon Blade, however, they had to follow through with this order because of their agreement.

Patch 1.5.0 (patch date:2005-06-07): Highlord Bolvar Fordragon should no longer despawn when "The Great Masquerade" is activated. After the death of Arthas Menethil, the mortal host of the Lich King, Bolvar Fordragon demanded that Tirion Fordring place the Helm of Domination, containing all of the powers of the Scourge, on his head, so that he would forever be the jailer of the damned - imprisoning the Lich King within the Frozen Throne once more and containing the threat of the Scourge. Bolvar gazed upwards, the tip of the citadel even visible from afar. The raven flew past him, cawing, and headed southwards, a river of moving corpses below it. Arno stood still as a statue, his eyes fixed on the dragons’ temple. As Bolvar marched on he began moving again, the snow crunching under his feet.
